Roller Skate Chat

Exploring the Roller Skating World with Mud

When you start to get involved with roller skating, you begin to explore more content, skaters, and brands to follow. During this journey, you may have come across Mud’s videos on Instagram. Mud is a versatile skater known for flipping from great heights and pulling off jaw-dropping grinds on street obstacles. Let’s delve into a quick chat with Mud about roller skating, their sports background, and their move to Denver to be a part of a larger skating community.

Q: Can you tell us when and how you started roller skating?

A: I’m about to hit my third year on skates! I first put on quads in April 2021 and never looked back. Initially, I started because I wanted to spend more time outdoors during the summers, but it quickly became my primary sport.

Q: Do you have a sports background?

A: Yes, I do. I have always been involved in gymnastics and skiing. Growing up, I would ski every weekend and hit the gym whenever possible. It’s a significant influence on my skating style and mindset.

Q: Your style of roller skating includes unique trick combos; where does the inspiration come from?

A: I draw inspiration from various sources around me. It could be from a trick I saw in a video, interactions with fellow skaters, or even abstract ideas that pop up in my mind. Ultimately, I focus on what feels good and brings me joy.

Q: What goes through your mind when you try new tricks?

A: When attempting new tricks, it’s all about committing and staying focused. I have to battle the fear in my mind and not let it overpower me. Doubt can lead to mistakes, so I remind myself to stay confident.

Q: We admire your commitment to wearing a helmet; what are your thoughts on protective gear?

A: Wearing a helmet is non-negotiable for me whenever I skate. I believe it is the most critical form of protection as our brains are fragile. Regardless of the trick’s difficulty, I prioritize safety because a fall can happen anytime and anywhere.

Q: From being known for big flips in park skating to transitioning into street obstacles, tell us more about that evolution.

A: Though I still enjoy flipping around, my skating style has evolved towards more technical and precise movements. It’s part of the natural progression in skating, where I follow what feels right for me at that moment.

Q: How did being a solo skater learning through videos influence your skating?

A: Before moving to Denver, I largely skated solo, learning from videos and practicing tricks on my own. This allowed me to analyze skating techniques, understand the physics behind moves, and spend hours honing my skills, shaping my skating journey.

Q: How would you describe the skate community in Denver?

A: Denver’s skate community is fantastic! The people here are incredibly welcoming and kind. The abundance of skateparks in Denver is unparalleled, offering a great environment for skaters. The inline community has also been very supportive, which I appreciate.

Q: What does the future hold for Mud?

A: I’m currently working on several projects, but you’ll have to stay tuned for updates! I believe in putting my heart into every project I undertake, so it takes time. I’m looking forward to what the future holds.

Q: Any advice for new skaters?

A: Don’t hesitate to break away from current skating trends and pursue what genuinely interests you. The most inspiring skaters are those who skate with passion and authenticity, without seeking approval. Embrace your love for skating and let it guide your journey.
